Rewards field notes

Before you join a rewards app, check these five things

Look beyond the headline offer. Understand redemption, eligibility, privacy, and the value of your time.

Start with how you get the reward

A rewards app is useful only if its redemption options suit you. Gift cards and cash are different outcomes. Before doing a task, open the provider’s current reward catalog and check the conditions attached to the option you actually want.

1. Check the redemption rules

Look for thresholds, processing steps, expiration rules, and identity checks in official help pages. A missing number on a comparison site is not a zero-dollar threshold.

2. Confirm your eligibility

Verify location, age, account, and device requirements with the provider. Do not assume a US-focused comparison establishes eligibility for every reader.

3. Read the individual offer

Shopping, receipt submission, surveys, and games involve different actions. Read what counts as completion before committing time or money.

4. Consider the information you share

Receipts and survey answers can contain personal information. Review the provider’s privacy policy and permissions. Decline an activity if its data requirements make you uncomfortable.

5. Treat your time as a cost

Keep your own record of time spent and rewards actually received. An advertised opportunity is not a guarantee. Never spend more solely to pursue a reward.
